In 1968, The Porsche 911T was introduced to the 911 line up as a stripped down 911 that costed 10% less than the 911S with a 2.0 L engine and output of 110 horsepower. In 1970, a 2.2 L engine was introduced and increased the horsepower to 125. The 911T ran for 5 years and the last production line was in 1973 where they increased the horsepower to 140 with a 2.4 L engine.
40 years later and at the end of the model designation 991.2, the 911T is once again introduced. But what is the appeal with the 911T and what makes it so special? Would you consider this a “cheap” 911? Absolutely not! The Porsche 911 Carrera T starts at $116,500; a $12,500 premium over a base Carrera with no options. This targets the minimalist who wants to have a lot more fun and be able to push a 911 to its limit. The “less is more” concept is taken into consideration to make the best valued 911.
In essence, they are bringing back the concept of the stripped down 911 Carrera with more standard options. These options include Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management with a 20 mm drop, sport performance exhaust, short shifter with a shorter gear ratio (manual transmission is a must), 20” Carrera S aluminum alloy wheels painted in Agate Grey with matching sport design mirrors, GT sport steering wheel, seat centres in Sport-Tex (usually a $4400 option with the regular Carrera) and lightweight windows. The 911T is now a 3.0 L engine with a twin turbo boxer 6 that will give an output of 370 horsepower.
The 911T will also offer exclusive options not available for the 911 Carrera; such as carbon bucket seats with rear passenger seat deletion for a premium of $5995, and rear axel steering for $2390. Sport Chrono Package is also offered at $370 as opposed to $2380 for the regular Carrera.
The more I researched this special addition to the line up, the more I wanted to get hands on one. I was fortunate to get an approval and I hope to take delivery in the month of May, 2019. I am looking forward to the summer and enjoying my first 911!
